Davide Levi Assistant Conductor at Royal Opera House

Davide, a graduate of the Music Composition degree at Northbrook, is flying high in his conducting career. He has taken up a place as assistant conductor at the Royal Opera House, and is also conductor of the Janus Ensemble.

After graduating with a Distinction in Music Composition for Professional Media at Northbrook College (Brighton University), He moved back to Milan to study conducting with M° Parisi at the Conservatoire where he graduated in 2013.

After his debut conducting Mozart’s Serenata Gran Partita and Salieri’s Armonia per un tempio della notte with the ensemble Maestri&Allievi, Davide has conducted Cimarosa’s “L’Impresario in angustie” in a successful production in Milan. In July 2013, he conducted a series of concerts with I Pomeriggi Musicali in Milan. He has worked as an assistant conductor for several opera productions in Italy and has collaborated with some of the finest Italian orchestras, amongst which La Verdi, I Pomeriggi Musicali and Sconfinarte, and the Jenaer Philharmonie in Germany.

Davide currently works as an assistant conductor at the Royal Opera House and as a freelance repetiteur and coach for opera singers. He is founder and conductor of the Janus Ensemble, an orchestra of young musicians that focuses on the performance of music by young composers.

As a composer, Davide has written music for full and chamber orchestra as well as solo instruments; he has been commissioned several works, including music for theatre, ballet and film. His music has been performed both in Italy and the UK.

He has worked, and still works, with artistic director Leighton Eves. The first collaboration took place in 2009, when Davide was asked to write two pieces for the fundraising Foodbank Event: choreographer and dancer Charlie Ranken beautifully interpreted his piece Abandoned, a contemporary and heart-breaking piece for solo dancer, while award-winning pianist Caroline Tyler performed his La Tempesta, for piano solo. The following year, Davide was asked to write arrangements for another fundraising event, Star!, which took place in Worthing, Winchester and Croydon.

He wrote the soundtrack for director Marco Bonfanti’s short films  “Le Parole di Stockhausen” and “Ordalia – dentro di me”.

In May 2013, Davide composed and performed live the soundtrack for the theatrical piece “L’uomo che piantava alberi”, based on Giono’s short story. Working with director and actor Gabriele Finzi, actor Pietro Anastasi and talented scenographer Alba Sarompas, they managed to create a magical atmosphere that enraptured the audience.

Currently, Davide is collaborating with Larp Music on the production of The Merchant of Venice at the Almeida Theatre, London and with the dance company Pointe Ahead on exciting new projects.
